Biography:
Dr. Huang is currently a senior lecturer with School of Engineering and ICT, University of Tasmania. He was a senior research scientist and the acting manager of the User Interaction and Collaboration team at CSIRO ICT Centre (now Data61). At CSIRO, he worked on a number of strategic and commercial multi-million dollar projects related to mobile/wearable/ubiquitous computing, computer-supported collaboration, computer graphics/vision/visualization/multimedia, and virtual/mixed/augmented reality. In those projects, he was a research leader responsible for defining and pursuing research questions. He designed system interfaces and interaction methods, investigated HCI, CSCW and human factors issues, and evaluated usability and user experience of using emerging technologies in industrial domains including mining, education, health and manufacturing. Another major line of his research is in data visualization and visual analytics.
He received his PhD in computer science from University of Sydney, in association with National ICT Australia (NICTA). He also has formal training in experimental psychology and professional experience in psychometrics. His research interests lie in human-centered computing in general, and HCI, visualization and visual perception and cognition in particular. He has over 100 publications in these areas including 5 books; one of his books: Recent Trends of Mobile Collaborative Augmented Reality Systems, was among the top 25% most downloaded eBooks of Springer, a major academic publisher. His research has achieved impact both in academia and in industry. He is a keynote speaker at CGIV12, ICEEST16, ICCGV16 and ICIVPR17, and has given invited talks and seminars at universities worldwide.
Dr. Huang served as a general chair or a technical program chair for a number of conferences and workshops. Currently, he is chairing the technical program for OzCHI'16 and the organizing committee for CDVE'16. He is a PC member for more than 70 conferences, and also regularly invited to serve as a reviewer or a guest editor on topics within his fields of expertise for top-tier journals including Nature Scientific Reports, Applied Cognitive Psychology and Information Sciences. He is a grant proposal assessor for the Australian Research Council and an examiner of PhD theses for seven top Australian universities. He is the executive editor for the Journal of Visual Languages and Computing and a founding chair for the technical committee on Visual Analytics and Communication of IEEE SMC Society. He also serves on the technical committee on Human-Computer Interaction of the society.
He has successfully developed/co-developed a number of projects funded by government funding agencies and commercial partners, including prestigous and competitive ARC DP and LP grants, with a total value of over 3 million dollars. He also provides consulting services to internal research teams and external companies on user requirements analysis, user interface design, production process optimization, human factors issues and data analysis. He has developed a 350-item checklist for heuristic evaluation of 3d multimodal user interfaces. The external companies he had worked with include EnergyAustralia, Echelon Mining Services, SGE Analytical Science, BHP Billiton, Boeing and Oracle.
Dr Huang is a senior member of HIT Lab Australia, an honorary associate with the University of Sydney, a professional member of Human Factors & Ergonomics Society of Australia, and a member of IEEE, ACM and ACS. In recent years, he has been a research fellow at University of Sydney and Australian Council for Educational Research (ACER), and a visiting researcher at University of Technology Sydney (UTS).
